(AUTHOR’S NOTE. – STUDENTS of ghost lore and haunted houses will find the foundation of the foregoing story in the legends about a skull which is still preserved in the farmhouse called Bettiscombe Manor, situated, I believe, on the Dorsetshire coast.)

The Monkey’s Paw: W.W. Jacobs

W.W. Jacobs, whose full name was William Wymark Jacobs (1863 – 1943) was an English author of novels and short stories. Though the majority of his writing contained a humorous tone, he is best remembered as the author of this chilling and cautionary horror story.

“The Money’s Paw” which was originally published in the collection The Lady in the Barge in 1902, is a tale that has been re-adapted and re-told in many forms, styles and even parodies all about the manner by which wishes might go awry in macabre ways.

Apart from the underlying message about the hidden cost of granted wishes, the story features an element of horror I have long been fascinated by. The fact that the monster, or the evil thing that is “behind the door” and left only to the readers imagination, is far more terrifying than if the door were to be opened and the entity standing there were to be seen.

This tale exemplifies the fact that those things left in the dark, hidden from our eyes, and away from the light produce horrors far richer than the ones in plan view.
